Salvation through good works - what's the problem?

I'm not even catholic but I see no problem with this. Doesn't it seem completely counter-intuitive that you could be a completely rotten human being but take the quick and easy out of "accepting Christ" and then going to heaven? And yet the kind and generous person who doesn't burns in hell forever? I mean, who BUYS this?
